Obituary for Martha Penry Kyhn

On October 19, 2019 Martha Kyhn, mother, wife, sister and great friend passed away. She was born May 19, 1942 in Fairhope, AL to Robert (Bob) and Estelle Johnson. She had one sister Barbara (Bobbie) Johnson who was also her best friend.

They moved from Saluria, Alabama to Arvada in 1954 . While attending Arvada Junior and Senior High School Martha made many lifelong friends. She graduated from Birmingham Southern University and went on to get her masters degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Martha taught elementary school in North Carolina, Platteville and Aurora Colorado. In June 1980 she married Del Kyhn.

Martha loved to be with friends and family and most of all to travel. In 1976 Martha and daughter Bobbie moved to Greece for a year. Martha and Del returned to Greece many times after that, making new friends with each trip. On a number of trips they were joined by friends as well as her sister Bobbie and brother-in-law, Art. Martha's adventurous spirit will carry on in our memories.

Organizations: Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, Aurora Education Association, Aurora Schools Credit Union Board of DIrectors, United Methodist Women, Hellenic American Cultural Association

Preceded in death by parents Robert and Estelle Johnson and sister Barbara (Bobbie) Kusulas.

Survived by husband Del, daughter Barbara Beasley (Dale) granddaughters Kate and Olivia of Arvada, niece Kathy Savage (Donnie) of San Diego, CA, nephew Chris Kusulas (Jennifer) of Southgate, MI, great nieces Emily and Megan Kusulas nephews, Zachary and Ryan Savage, uncles Walter (Jane) and Bill Penry of Baldwin County, Alabama and numerous cousins that she adored.

Memorial Service will be held on November 8th at 1:00 at Arvada United Methodist Church, 6750 Carr St. Followed by a celebration at Morningside Manor, 13251 W 64th Ave., Arvada.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society

Barbara Austin

Martha was a favorite friend of mine from the time I met her in 1968 at UNC. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a spunky perspective on life. Her friends could rely on her for a good time. She was always available for long conversations and she was well versed on numerous topics. She was insightful and she definitely had her opinions, especially regarding politics. I valued those opinions. Her courage as she faced the challenges of MS is to be admired. I never once heard her complain or feel sorry for herself. She was a valiant fighter. I'm torn between grief that she is gone and relief that she doesn't have to suffer anymore. Goodbye sweet friend, and I look forward to the day we will all be reunited.

Rose Marie Sevilla Alexander

Martha and I have been friends since 1954 sharing many memories such as slumber parties, school activities, class reunions, graduation from high school, raising children, marriages, and visits over the years. Her Dad was Superintendent of Schools in Jefferson County and while we were growing up allowed us to have many parties and get together a at their home. Martha will be greatly missed as she had such a warm invigorating personality and a great sense of humor. Condolences to her family and many friends. Rosie Sevilla Alexander, Hobe Sound, Florida.

Carol Page

Martha was a special person who created smiles and positivity wherever she was. She was also a loyal friend to many. I was fortunate to know her since 1956. We have kept in touch and found much support as we married, had children, gone to school, and found our way in careers. So happy that Martha was able to travel to Greece many times, enjoying the history and culture of a country she so loved. My heart is sad that she is no longer with us but I am richer for having known her so many years. My deepest condolences to the family.
